Stranger Things of Saco Part I
“I’ll see you guys tomorrow,” said Will Byers. It was a warm summer night, but something felt off to Will, but he didn’t really think anything of it, so like always, he texted his mother saying he’ll be home shortly. Will then picked up his bike and rode away from Mike’s house on his way home. On his route home Will always has to pass by the Saco Heath, it always creeps him out. So just like every other night, he rides just a little faster than normal past that part, but something caught his eye causing him to stop. Over on the side in the dirt parking lot, he notices this unusually bright light, as he gets closer it gets brighter, then in a split second out of nowhere he sees a large dark figure then something grabs him and everything goes dark.
As Joyce Byers is leaving her third shift job she checks her phone to see if Will texted her. She looks down to see that he said he had left, but she never got the “I’m home” text he always sends, “maybe he just forgot to text me when he got home last night” she thought to herself. As Joyce pulls into the driveway she doesn’t notice Will’s bike, but that's not unusual as he sometimes brings it around the back. She peaks around back but doesn’t see his bike, she’s now starting to become worried.
Mike, Lucas, and Dustin all gathered at their usual meet up spot but noticed that Will hadn’t shown up yet. So the boys decided to all bike to Will’s house to see if he was alright. As they were riding along they noticed the police chief headed down near where Will lives, but they didn’t think anything of it. As they continue Lucas shouts “hey my shoe came undone can we stop for a sec” so all the boys pull into the Heath parking lot so Lucas can tie his shoe. As they’re waiting Dustin decided to walk around for a second and then noticed something out of the corner of his eye, “hey guys take a look at this.” The boys all gather around Will’s bike that Dustin found just laying in the dirt. “Yo do you guys think Will is alright,” Mike asked? “Dude I hope so” Lucas whispered. “We need to find him,” Dustin said while scanning the wood line. The boys then head down the path into the Heath. “WILL,” screamed Mike, “Dude he’s not here, we’ve checked the whole path,” Lucas said. “We need to get to his house, now,” Dustin said while headed back towards their bikes. The boys then race towards Will’s house, “maybe Hopper driving towards Will’s house wasn’t a coincidence after all,” Dustin thought to himself.
“Hopper, where could he be,” Cried Joyce. “He texts me every night when he leaves and when he gets home, Hopper,” Joyce wailed. “Alright Joyce take a deep breath, it won’t help any bit if you pass out from a panic attack,” Jim Hopper said while trying to calm her down. Just as Joyce started to calm herself, all of Will’s friends come skidding in on their bikes asking in Will is okay. “Alright boys, what happened?” Jim asked. “We were wondering the same thing,” Mike said while trying to catch his breath. “Last time we all saw Will was when we were leaving our D&D game,” Lucas answered. “So you boys have no idea where Will Byers is?” “No, I texted him late last night but he never texted back, I just assumed he was sleeping,” Dustin said. “You Boys need to go back home and I’ll let you know if I find anything,” Jim told the boys. “No way, we're staying to help,” “No you’re not, it could be dangerous, and it's bad enough that one of y’all are missing, I don't want another,” Jim said sternly. “Alright fine we’ll leave,” said Lucas, “but you might want to start at the Heath, that’s where we found Will’s bike.” The boys then took off down the street.
“We can’t just not look for Will,” Dustin said while the boys were riding down the street. “I agree, we need to find him” Mike answered. “We need to go back to the Heath and keep looking, there has to be something, Will can’t just vanish,” Lucas suggested. The boys all headed back to the Heath, when they got there they walked all the way back down the boardwalk looking for any clues as to what might’ve happened to Will. The boys searched every inch of the place, then Lucas noticed something hanging from a branch, when he looked closer it appeared to be a part of a hospital gown, which was weird because the nearest hospital was in the next town over. “Guys check this out,” Lucas said while holding up the piece of cloth. “What is it?” Dustin asked. “It’s a piece of a hospital gown, do you guys think anyone is here that might’ve left this?” Mike asked. Then all of a sudden out of nowhere a huge rock flies by their heads. “Whoa what the hell was that?” Dustin yelled. All of the boys turn around to see a very pale girl with a shaven head standing there. They all jumped and took a step back, “who the hell are you and why did you try to kill me” said Lucas. She just stood there sorta cowering as if she thought they might hurt her. “Eleven,” she said. “Is that your name? Eleven?” Mike asked her. She just nodded her head. “Look Eleven, we’re not here to hurt you we’re just trying to find our friend, have you seen him? Can you help us?” Lucas asked her. Again she just shook nodded her head. “You look starving, take this,” said Dustin, while handing her a granola bar. “Let's bring her back to my place so we can give her some clothes and food, and then maybe she’ll talk to us some more,” suggested Mike. Eleven eventually agreed and went back to Mike’s house with the boys.
Joyce couldn’t take it any longer so she called Hopper. “Hopper, I’m not just going to stand around do nothing, my baby boy is missing,” she cried. “Joyce calm down, I’m at the Heath right now, I’ll call you back as soon as I find something, in the meantime get posters made, run an ad in the newspaper, and go see about having the nightly news put out a broadcast to try and help locate Will. “Okay I think I can do that, just please find him, Hopper.” Joyce hung up and got in her car and headed into town.
As Hopper arrived he notice the boys biking away down the road. As he looked around he found Will’s bike in the parking lot. He scouted the whole place, not a single clue, no tire marks other than from the bikes, no footprints walking away from the bike. “Where the hell did this kid go, it’s as if he just vanished into thin air,” Hopper thought to himself. He then noticed something blowing in the wind, he ran after it and snatched it from the air, “it almost looks like something you would wear at the doctors or at a hospital, it looks like it was ripped from a gown,” he thought to himself. The closest hospital is the next town over. He then had a suspicion, “there’s a government building in the back of the Saco transfer station just down the road, what if it’s actually a laboratory of some sort, there had always been rumors about that place.”
“So now that you have clothes and food, are you willing to talk to us,” Mike asked. Eleven nodded yes. “Do you know where our friend Will is?” asked Lucas. Again she nodded. “Where is he then?” “the other world,” Eleven said. “What do you mean, the other world, like a different dimension?” Dustin asked. “I don’t know, I can see him sometimes, but I don’t know how to get to him.” “Dude she’s insane, there aren’t any other dimensions,” Lucas said angrily. “If you want to find him you need to get to the other world.” The boys seemed very upset and frustrated. Then all of a sudden Mike notices one of his baseballs just floating in mid-air. “Woa are you doing that?” Mike asked. The ball then flew into Eleven’s hand as she nodded. It appeared that she also had a bloody nose.
As Hopper pulled up to the building he noted that it was odd to keep motion lights and a barb wired fence around a normal government building. As he approached the entrance he was met by two armed guards, who were questioning what he was doing here. “I want to speak to your director about a missing child not too far from here, plus I’ve always wondered what the inside of this building looked like.” The guards then escorted him inside. “How are you doing Dr. Brenner, I’m chief Jim Hopper with the Saco PD, I was wondering if you could possibly help me with something regarding a missing child's case.” “Sure, I don't know how much of a help I can be but I’ll try,” Dr.Brenner answered. “I was wondering if I could see your security camera footage outside your facility from last night, and I was also wondering if you’ve ever seen this material before,” Hopper said while pulling out the torn piece of cloth. “No, I’ve never seen it before, but as for the footage I can go download it for you, it’ll just take a little bit.” “That's fine, I’m in no rush,” Hopper answered. The director and the guards then leave to get the footage. While there gone Hopper steps out of the room and sneaks around a little bit, he then comes up to this windowed door. Inside the room, it looks like a child's room, there are crayon drawings on the wall and toys on the floor, “Well I’ll be damned” Hopper thought, sitting on the floor in the corner of the room was what appeared to be a hospital gown with the exact same pattern on it. “Mr. Hopper you should know better than to go snooping around in a government facility.” But before Hopper could turn around to look at the director, the last thing he remembered was being struck in the back of the head and being injected with something. “What the hell happened to me, why am I in my house?” Hopper said to himself. He then noticed something odd with his light, when he went to investigate it he noticed that someone had bugged his house and was listening to him. “It has to be those damn government people at the facility,” Hopper thought. He got dressed, grabbed his hat and gun and went out the door.
